Missed a dose? Here’s what to do (and what not to do)
It happens to everyone. The right response depends on the medicine and the timing. General rules, common myths, and when to call the pharmacist.

Missing a dose happens to everyone. What matters is what you do next — and the safest answer depends on the specific medicine and how much time has passed.
The general rule of thumb
For many medications, if you remember soon after the missed time, you can take it. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue as normal.
The one thing not to do
Don’t double up to “catch up” unless a healthcare professional has told you to. Taking two doses at once can cause side effects or, for some medicines, be dangerous.
When the medicine changes the rules
- Time-critical medicines (some heart, seizure, or diabetes medications) have stricter rules — check the leaflet or ask.
- Antibiotics should be taken as evenly spaced as possible to stay effective.
- Contraceptives have specific missed-dose instructions that matter.
Common myths
“A missed dose ruins the whole course” — usually not true for a single miss. “I’ll just take extra tomorrow” — usually not safe. When in doubt, don’t guess.
When to call the pharmacist
A pharmacist can give you medicine-specific advice in minutes, often without an appointment. If you’ve missed several doses, feel unwell, or aren’t sure of the rule for your medication, call them.
